introduction Flashcards
what is the function of the urinary system?
eliminate wastes, regulate blood volume and pressure and pH, control levels of electrolytes and metabolites
function of kidneys
produce urine-> nephrons, filtering fluid to maintain electrolyte and fluid balance
what two tubes exits the kidneys
ureters
function of ureters
transport urine to bladder. when ureters swell, smooth muscle layer muscularis contracts in waves called peristalsis, propelling urine into the bladder.
bladder
temporary storage sack of urine. contracts and expands in regards to urine volume
three layers of bladder wall
mucosa- inner layer
detrusor muscle
fibrous covering - outer layer
what happens to the detrusor muscle when bladder fills with urine
detrusor muscle contracts squeezing on the urine in the bladder to produce micturition.
urethra
tube responsible for transporting urine outside the body
orders of urinary system organs
kidneys-> ureters->bladder->urethra
which parts of the kidney contain nephrons
cortex and medulla
pelvis
funnel shaped tube continuous with the ureter
what is the renal pelvis
The area at the center of the kidney. Urine collects here and is funneled into the ureter
kidneys filter entire plasma how many times per day?
60
male urethra double function
carry semen and urine out of body
urethra has two sphincters?
internal and external urethral sphincter
