Introduction Flashcards
Why are caregiver to infant relationships important
- take place from birth to signal needs
- help to form how good or bad future attachments will be
- type of response determines formation of attachment
- helps with development( physical,neurological,cognitive,emotional
Why are caregiver to infant relationships not Important
- evidence of individuals without an attachment have no adverse effects
- children can have other significant figures in their lives e.g teacher or siblings
what is an attachment
interactions between infants and their caregivers. It is the responsiveness of the caregiver to the infant’s signals that has profound effects.
What is caregiver infant interaction
interactions have essential functions for the child’s social development, in particular for the development of caregiver infant attachment.
What is reciprocity
when each person responds to the other and elicits a response from them
What is interactional synchrony
2 people are synchronised when they carry the same action simultaneously/ temporal coordination of micro level social behaviour.
ACTIONS MIRROR EACH OTHER
explain meltzoff and Moore study
MELTZOFF AND MOORE
• Aim: examine interactional synchrony infants
• Procedure: controlled observation - adult model displayed one of three facial expression
• At first dummy used to prevent facial expression
• After display dummy removed and expression was observed
• Findings: clear association between infant behaviour and adult model
• Conclusion: IS - innate/ reduces strength that I.S. is learned
Explain schaffer and Emerson study
PARENT INFANT ATTACHMENT - SCHAFFER AND EMERSON
• Thought in terms of mother-infant attachment.
• Infants attach to mothers at 7 months.
• After few weeks form secondary attachments
• 75% attachment to father formed at 18 months.
Explain field 1978 study
• Filmed 4 month old babies in face to face interactions with primary caregiver mothers and fathers secondary caregiver fathers
• PCF spent more time smiling imitating and holding infants than SCF
• Behaviour important to building an attachment with the infant.
• Fathers CAN be the more nurturing attachment figure.
• Key to attachment = level of responsiveness does not gender of parent
