Imprinitng Flashcards
What is imprinting
A recipricol mental image in the animal kingdom between a mother and an infant based on sight and smell
What does the idea surround?
Idea that some animals will follow the first moving object seen
Who devised imprinting
Konrad Lorenz an ethologist
What is ethology
Study of animal behaviour in their natural environment
What does imprinting ensure
Ensures a bond between a mother and infant in the animal world and increases the chances of survival meaning animals need imprinting to survive
What does Lorenzes study entail
Lorenz did a study of imprinting on animals and found they are not brown with a ready made image of their parents
How did Lorenz do his study
Field experiment, i independent variable naturally occurs
Step by step of Lorenz study
1) took a clutch of geese eggs and divided them into 2 groups
2) one group of eggs wheere left with their natural mother and one where in an incubator
3) when the eggs hatched Lorenz was the first moving thing the eggs saw along with the mother being the first thing the other eggs saw
4) eggs started following Lorenz around
5) to test the extent he marked them up and mixed the two groups together
6) the goslings devided themselves up, one following the natural mother and one following Lorenz
How else was imprinting tested ?
Tested in laboratory/controlled conditions to test if improving can occur towards inanimate objects
