Chemical Reaction Engineering
Enumeration.
Pillars of CRE.
- Mole Balance
- Rate Laws
- Stoichiometry
- Energy Balance
- Diffusion
- Contacting
The study of chemical reaction rates and reaction mechanisms.
Chemical Kinetics
Enumeration.
Typical Chemical Process.
- Raw Materials
- Physical Treatment Steps
- Chemical Treatment Steps
- Physical Treatment Steps
- Recycle
- Products
How materials flow through and contact each other in the reactor, how early or late they mix, their clumpiness or state of aggregation.
Contacting Pattern
How fast things happen. If very fast, then equilibrium tells what will leave the reactor. If not so fast, then the rate of chemical reaction, and maybe heat and mass transfer too, will determine what will happen.
Kinetics
It takes place in one phase alone.
Homogenous Reaction
It requires the presence of at least two phases to proceed at the rate that it does.
Heterogenous Reaction
Materials that are neither reactants nor products and act as go-betweens, either hindering or accelerating the reaction process.
Catalyst
The measure of the change in concentration of the reactants or the change in concentration of the products per unit time.
Reaction Rate
What are the variables affecting rate of reaction in homogenous systems?
Temperature, Pressure, and Composition
What are the variable affecting rate of reaction in heterogenous reaction?
Heat and Mass Transfer
It depends on energy and frequency of collisions.
Rate of Reaction
True or False.
Increasing energy and frequency of collisions increases the rate of reaction.
True
Enumeration.
Factors affecting chemical reaction rates.
- Temperature
- Concentration
- Pressure
- Surface Area
- Presence of Catalyst
Any chemical component.
Chemical Species
Element with given identity.
Chemical Species
Enumeration.
Ways to lose chemical identity.
- Decomposition
- Combination
- Isomerization
Takes place when a detectable number of molecules of one or more species have lost their identity.
Chemical Reaction
True or False.
The limiting reactant is usually chosen as the basis of calculation.
True
True or False.
The rate of disappearance of A depends on temperature.

Rate of Disappearance of A per unit volume
What does rB stands for?
Rate of Formation
