Introduction Flashcards
What is morphology?
the study of the form of things
What is the dental arch?
teeth, gingiva, and associated bone
What is the maxillary arch?
the upper arch including the associated teeth
What is the mandibular arch?
the lower arch and associated teeth
Do both the mandible and maxilla move?
no, only the mandible
How many permanent teeth are there?
32
What is the formula for permanent teeth?
I 2/2 C 1/1 P 2/2 M 3/3
How are quadrants formed?
divide each arch at the midline and then each half arch is a quadrant
What are the anterior teeth?
incisors (8) and canines (4)
What are the posterior teeth?
premolars (8) and molars (12)
How many deciduous or primary teeth?
20 (10 per arch)
-4 incisors
-2 canines
-4 molars
What is the deciduous dental formula?
I 2/2 C 1/1 M 2/2
What is the crown?
outside of tooth covered in enamel
What is the root?
under the gum covered with cementum
What is enamel?
the dense hydroxyapatite surface of the crown
What is dentin?
the inner hard layer of the crown and root
What is the pulp?
the vascular innervate portion of the tooth
What is the cementum?
the outer layer of the root surface
What is the dentoenamel junction?
junction of enamel and dentin layers
What is the cementoenamel junction?
junction of enamel and cementum layer3s
What is the cervical line?
junction of the anatomical crown and root
What is the clinical crown?
the portion of the tooth visible in the mouth
What is the anatomical crown?
the crown above the CEJ
What is the facial/buccal/labial surface?
outermost surface toward the cheek or lips
What is the lingual/palatal surface?
inner most surface toward the tongue or palate
What is the mesial surface?
toward the median line
What is the distal surface?
away from the median line
What is the incisal surface?
the biting or incising edge of anterior teeth
What is the occusal surface
the biting or chewing surface of posterior teeth
What is a cusp?
the projection on a crown
What is a fossa?
depression or concavity between cusps or ridges
What is the ridge on the crown?
linear elevation on the surface of a tooth and is named according to location
What is the cingulum?
lingual crown projection on anterior teeth
What is the groove of a crown?
line between the primary parts of a crown or root
What is the pit of a crown?
pinpoint depression at the junction or termination of a groove
What is the lobe of a crown?
primary center of development within a tooth
What are mamelon?
round projections of enamel on newly erupted teeth
-incisal remnant of incisor development
What is the furcation of the root?
where the root divides
What is the root apex?
the opening in the root for entrance of the pulp
What is the pulp?
vascular innervated portion of the tooth
What is the pulp chamber?
chamber containing dental pulp
What is the pulp horn?
highest projection of pulp chamber within the crown
What is the pulp canal?
inner portion of the root containing the dental pulp
What is periodontium?
the tissues that surround the teeth
-gingiva
-cementum
-alevolar bone
-periodontal ligament
What is the gingiva?
covers the bone and surrounds cervical portion of teeth
-plae pink
What is alveolar mucosa?
dark red
-loose attachment to underlying bone
What is mucogingival junction?
junction of alveolar muscosa and gingiva
What is the free gingiva?
closer to the tooth crown, not attached to the bone
What is the free gingival groove?
separates attached gingiva from free gingiva
What is the interdental papilla (gingival papilla)?
the triangular shaped gingiva that occupies the gingival embrasure
what is the gingival sulcus?
not seen visually, but can be evaluated with a periodontal probe
-space between tooth surface and narrow cervical collar of free gingiva
What is the periodontal ligament?
surrounds tooth root and attaches tooth to alveolar bone
What is alveolar bone?
forms and supports tooth sockets
What is the blue part of the tooth?
incisal edge
What is the orange part of the tooth?
occlusal surface
