Intro - Ways To Acquire Knowledge Flashcards
What are traditional practices?
Practices that have been passed down from earlier nurses/providers, unit/workplace history
Drawback of traditional practices?
Some practices may not be effective, are outdated, not culturally sensitive and potentially harmful
What is authority?
Students look to teachers, seniors, staff, trusted colleagues and internet to share info about clinical practices
Drawback of authority?
Info provided by authorities may not have been systematically tested/may not be current
What is personal experiences?
When managing a clinical problem nurses will sometimes use similar, former experiences to aid their decision making
Drawback of personal experiences?
- individuals will encounter clinical situations they never experienced before
- personal biases may mislead interpretation
- intuition is a hunch that people will use to guide their actions; potentially incorrect
What is trial and error?
Nurses try several options until one works and solves their problem
Drawback of trial and error?
Inefficient and unsystematic
What is inductive reasoning?
Bottom up approach
Specific to general
Drawback of inductive reasoning?
Person may not have sufficient experience with a specific case to correctly draw a larger conclusion
What is deductive reasoning?
Top down approach
General to specific
Drawback of deductive reasoning?
Person may not have sufficient, accurate info to correctly deduce what the appropriate actions are
