Intro - EBP Flashcards
What is EBP?
Applies existing knowledge to clinical practice to improve patient outcomes
Difference between EDP process and Research process?
Research process involves designing and conducting studies to generate new knowledge whereas EDP process involves searching for and appraising existing studies to use for clinical practice
Why is EBP important now?
- changing patient demographics require a change in approaches to care
- many people don’t know how to search, evaluate and apply evidence in practice
What are the three key components?
A. Research evidence
B. Clinical expertise
C. Patient values & circumstances
Why are the three components important?
Integrating all three will help HCP’s make informed decisions tailored to each patient’s unique situation
What are the steps to EBP process?
- Assess practice
- Decide
- Plan
- Intervene
- Evaluate
- Disseminate findings
- Assess practice
Formulate question based on specific patient or scenario. What isn’t working? What do you want to know about?
- Decision
Search for best available evidence to answer question
- Plan
Make a plan to change care based on findings
- Intervene
Integrate evidence with clinical expertise and patient preferences to implement findings
- Evaluate
Evaluate outcomes (both negative and positive) and reflect on effectiveness of EBP
- Disseminate findings
Share lessons learned
What does evidence informed practice mean?
Use of evidence in nurse’s practice
What does evidence informed decision making mean?
Use of evidence as part of decision making process, along with other factors such as resources, cultural values and beliefs, etc.
