Intro To Zoology: Basic Vocab Flashcards
Vertebrate
-animal with a dorsal nerve chord and/or backbone
Asymmetry
Body cannot be cut in half to form two (almost) identical sides.
Radial symmetry
Body can be cut in half on an axis in many different ways
Bilateral symmetry
Can be cut in half only once
Segmentation
Body has sections that repeat
Anterior
Front/head
Posterior
Back/hind
Ventral
Underside
Dorsal
Backside
Asexual reproduction
- no gene combos
- only one parent
- cloning
Sexual reproduction
- gene combos
- two parents
Hermaphrodite
Both male and female at same time
Dioecious
Either male or female, but not both
External fertilization
Outside of body in water
Internal fertilization
Inside body of organism
Endothermic (temp control)
- homeothermic
- warm-blooded
- create heat within body
Ectothermic (temp control)
- poikilothermic
- cold-blooded
- need to warm by sunlight or environment
Filter feeder (feeding system)
Takes in water and filters out particles to eat
Invertebrate
- animal without a central dorsal backbone
- often have external skeletons
Chunk feeder (feeding system)
Feeds on large particles of nutrients
Embryology
The development of an animal after conception
Acoelomate
Without a body cavity
Pseudocoelomate
A body cavity that has two openings
Blastula
A hollow ball of cells formed by early cells.
Gastrula
Cells on one side of the blastula fold inward to form this
Ectoderm (cell layer of Gastrula)
Outer layer of cells on the Gastrula
Endoderm (cell layer of Gastrula)
Inner layer of cells within the Gastrula
Protostome (cell layer of Gastrula)
Mouth develops from opening in the Gastrula (mollusks, arthropods, annelids)
Deuterosome
Anus develops from opening in Gastrula. Mouth develops elsewhere. (Echinoderms and chordates)
