Intro to Veterinary Pathology Flashcards
Pathology
The study of mechanisms of disease (molecular, biochemical, functional, and morphological responses of cells, tissues, and organs to injury)
-Bridge between basic sciences and clinical sciences
Disease
Clinically apparent dysfunction manifested as a result of abnormalities in cells, tissues, or organ systems
Autopsy/Necropsy
Provides information on how to manage disease outbreaks in herds and how to improve management
Biopsy
Examination and diagnosis help clinicians determine treatment options
Toxicological pathologists
Test and evaluate the effects of drugs and chemicals in laboratory animals
Experimental pathologists
Study the molecular mechanisms of human and animal diseases
Clinical pathologists
Biopsy and cytology of the live animal
Anatomic pathologists
Biopsy, cytology, and autopsy of live and dead animals
Morphologic changes
To determine the cause of disease, the pathologist relies on gross and microscopic structural abnormalities (lesions) that develop in diseased cells, tissues, and organs
Non-morphologic techniques
ID of infectious agents, quantifications of chemical deficiencies or excesses, genetic testing used to determine the cause of disease
Morphologic diagnosis
A way for the pathologist to communicate the histologic and gross examinations to the client
- Concise description of the lesion
- Informative
- Subjective, divisive, and convoluted
- Includes tissue, pathologic process, +/- distribution
Pathogenesis
The sequence of cellular, biochemical, and molecular events that follow the exposure of cells or tissues to an injurious agent
-Starting with the initiating event, ending with the lesion
