Intro to Thermodfluid Flashcards
Zeroth Law of Thermodynamics
If two bodies are in thermal equilibrium with a third body, then they are also in thermal equilibrium with each other
First Law of Thermodynamics
- Conservation of energy principle
- During an interaction, energy can change from one form to another but the total amount of energy remains constant
Second Law of thermodynamics
Energy has quality as well as quantity, and processes occur in the direction of decreasing quality of energy.
What is a system in thermodynamics?
The part of universe selected for thermodynamic consideration.
What is property in thermodynamics?
Any observable characteristic of a system.
What are the 7 fundamental dimensions?
Length (m), Time (s), mass (M), temperature (K), amount of substance (N), current (I) and angle (rad)
What is an extensive property and can you give an example?
A property which depends on extent of system as well as on its state.
Mass, volume, amount of substance, potential energy and electrical charge
What is an intensive property and can you give some example?
A property which is independent of extent of system, (Not additive)
Density, specific volume, molar mass, strain, elevation and electrical potential
