Intro to the pelvis and perineum Flashcards
What effect can a pituitary adenoma have on vision?
Put pressure on surrounding structures - bilateral hemianopia - temporal field of view lost (peripheral vision)
In histology, what are the 3 types of cells seen? What can each cell secrete?
Acidophils - GH/prolactin
Basophils - TSH, ACTH, FSH,LH
Chromophobes
What fascia surrounds the thyroid gland?
pre-tracheal fascia
Explain the embryological origins of the adrenal gland
outer cortex- coelomic mesoderm
inner medulla - neuroectoderm
Which part secretes what? Which parts controlled by what?
outer cortex - steroid hormones (controlled by adenohypophysis)
inner medulla - catecholamines (nervous control)
5 cells in pancreas. What do they secrete?
beta cells - insulin alpha cells - glucagon delta cells - somatostatin PP cells - pancreatic polypeptide epsilon cells - ghrelin
List some characteristics of male and female bony pelvis
bony landmarks more pronounced in male than female
tends to be heavier
subpubic angle is more narrow in males <70 in men
acetabulum tends to be larger
obturator foramen tends to be rounder
pelvic inlet heart shape
pelvic inlet and outer are smaller
