Intro to the Heart Flashcards
What is the difference between pulmonary circuit and the systemic circuit?
- oxygen-poor blood to lung through pulmonary circuit
- oxygen-rich blood to rest or the body through systemic circuit
Pulmonary circuit pathway
veins, right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary arteries, lungs, pulmonary veins, left atrium
Systemic circuit pathway
left atrium, left ventricle, aorta, systemic arteries
3 types of blood vessels
arteries, veins, capillaries
Where do arteries carry blood to?
away from the heart
Where do veins carry blood to?
to the heart
What are capillaries
networks between arteries and veins
Mediastinum definition
cavity between the lungs
Pericardial sac definition
sac of collagen fibers surrounding the heart that keeps the heart stable
Pericardium structure
2 layers: parietal and visceral pericardium
parietal: outer layer, forms inner layer of pericardial sac
visceral: inner layer of pericardium
Pericardium function
protection of the heart, reduces friction
What is pericardial fluid?
serous fluid located between the layers of the pericardium
Pericardial fluid function
reduces friction during heart contraction
