Intro to Study Designs Flashcards
What is a case report?
It is a report on a single person.
How does a case report differ from a case Series?
A case report is a report on one patient/person while a case series includes a few people studied.
Is a case series enough to base treatment off of?
NO, but it is something to consider or use to jumpstart further interest on a topic.
What does Randomized mean?
That the participants are randomly assigned to different groups- whether experimental or control.
What is a meta-analyses?
A combination of many studies coming to one conclusion.
How do you know when an article is a meta-analyses?
It will sometimes say so, or it will list the different publications it received the info from, or it will indicate that is a study with a variety.
How does Systematic differ from Meta-analyses?
A systematic review will filter for common themes. While a Meta-analyses does a broad search, looks at accepted methodology, the narrows down to the reliable sources and finally does another meta-analyses to come to a conclusion.
What are the best two options for research?
- Meta-analyses
2. Systematic review
Which method has a control group and treatment group, does follow up and compares results?
Randomized control studies
Which study is retrospective?
Case control studies
Are randomized control studies and cohort studies prospective or retrospective?
prospective- look at things goung forward
Which study measures their subjects at one point in time?
Cross- Sectional study
What are all the different study options?
Case report Case series Randomized control study Cohort study Cohort studies Case control studies Cross sectional study Systematic review Meta-analyses
Which studies are considered “filtered information”?
- Background info/ Expert opinion
- Case control studies: case report, case series
- Cohort studies
- Randomized control trials
What are some places to go for peer-reviewed articles, meta-analyses etc?
- PubMEd
- The Cochrane Library
- Medline
