Intro to section 3 Flashcards
Is staining the preferred way to see living, moving microbes? & Why?
no, the staining procedures or the stains themselves can kill most microbes
Dyes that are positively charged are attracted to the ___ components of living cells?
negative components
What components (positive or negative)are more abundant in cells?
negative
Using a dye that is positively charge will the cell pick or up repel the dye?
the cell will pick up the color
Dyes that are negatively charged will be attracted to what components of the cell?
the positive components of the cell
Most negatively charged dyes are (repelled/picked up) by the cell
repelled
After the negative dying, what will cell appear as?
clear, with a dark background
Simple stain definition:
a procedure that uses one positively charged dye t give cells color
3 examples of a simple stain:
methylene blue, crystal violet, safranin and manevals
Negative stain def:
a procedure that uses a negatively charged dye to stain the background while the cells remain virtually colorless
3 examples of negative stain:
Eosin, india ink, nigrosin and congo red
Differential stain def:
use two or more dyes to reveal differences between cells , or their parts. Most differential stains include a primary stain, counterstain, and a decolorizer
