Intro to protein biochemistry - L2 Flashcards
What is an enzyme?
A protein that speeds up the rate of the reaction, doesn’t change final equilibrium and has an active site for substrate to bind to.
What is the primary structure of a protein?
The order of the amino acids in the polypeptide
What is the secondary structure of a protein
Regular repeating structure of amino acids, stabilised by hydrogen bonds between amino acid NH and CO groups.
What is the tertiary structure of a protein?
3-D structure of a protein (determined by non-covalent interactions)
What is the quaternary structure of a protein?
A complex structure with 2 or more subunits.
What is a protein domain?
A part of the protein structure which folds and functions independently. Domains carry out a specific part of the protein’s function.
What is methylation?
Addition of a methylgroup -CH3 (a type of post translational modification).
What is glycosylation?
addition of various sugars
What is ubiquintination?
addition of a 76-aa polypeptide. These polymers mark at a protein for degradation.
What is Phosphorylation?
addition of phosphate groups (by enzymes called kinases & is reversible)
