Intro to PID Flashcards
Infection
the invasion and multiplication of pathogens in a individual/population
Disease
a disorder of structure or function in the host that adversely impacts the host and is not simply a result of physical injury
Infectious diseases
diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms
etiology
study of the cause of disease
commensalism
a microbe-host relationship in which one organism derives benefits while the other is unaffected
parasitism
a microbe-host relationship in which one organism derives benefits at the expense of the other
pathogen
a microbe capable of causing disease
Obligate pathogen
a microbe that must produce disease to transmit and survive evolutionary
facultative pathogen
microbes that can infect/multiply in hosts OR in the evironment
commensal pathogen
a mircobe that is commonly found within indigenous microbiota that can cause disease in normal hosts with some regularity
opportunistic pathogens
a microbe that MIGHT cause disease in an immune-compromised host
environmental pathogens
a microbe capable of causing disease that is transmitted to the host from an environmental source (i.e. water or soil)
zoonotic pathogen
a microbe that is a colonizer/pathogen in animals that can be transmitted to humans through vectors or direct contact with the animal
