Intro To Physical Geography Flashcards
What is a coastline?
The area of land where the sea meets the shore. It is a dynamic zone where atmosphere, ocean and land interact.
What is the atmosphere?
- thin layer around the Earth
- filled with greenhouse gases
- protects us from harmful UV rays from the Sun
- traps heat
What is the hydrosphere?
- all water on Earth
- 1% fresh water
- 99% salt water
- 70% of the Earth
What can the weather in the atmosphere affect?
The coastlines because of winds and storms
What do rivers bring down?
Sediment
What is the hydroshphere a factor of?
The coastline
How does the lithosphere play a part in coastlines?
Due to the creation of waves and the seabed. Water can shape rock by eroding it, eg. sand/pebble beaches)
What contribute energy to form and shape a coast?
Ocean temperatures, waves, tidal currents and wind
What is coastal change?
The result of these processes (wind, ocean temperatures, tidal currents and waves), taking place over short (eg. cliff collapse), medium (eg. seasonal changes) and long (eg. sea level rise) time scales.
