Intro To PA Flashcards
What are PA (Physical Agents)
Energy and Materials applied to a patient
3 Categories of Physical Agents
Thermal, Mechanical and Electromagnetic
Purpose of thermal agents
To transfer energy to a patient to increase or decrease tissue temperature
Examples of thermal agents
Hot packs, ice packs, ultrasound, diathermy and whirlpool
Purpose of mechanical agents
Apply force to increase or decrease pressure on the body
Examples of mechanical agents
Water/hydrotherapy, traction, compression and ultrasound
Purpose of electromagnetic agents
Apply energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation or electrical current
Examples of electromagnetic agents
Uv radiation, infrared radiation, laser, diathermy(shortwave/microwave) electrical current
Effects of PA
Reduce inflammation, accelerate tissue healing, relieve pain, alter collagen extensibility, modify muscle tone
General Contradictions of PA
Pregnancy, Malignancy, pacemaker or other implanted eletrical device, impaired sensation or mentation
Exteroceptive
Light touch, superficial pain (Sharp, Dull), temperature
Proprioceptive
Vibration
