Intro to Organic Chem Flashcards
What makes the biological function of a molecule?
Depends on the structure and functional groups
Define a constitutional isomer
Molecules with the same chemical formula but have different connectivities.
Have different chemical and physical properties
What does it mean to have an atom with no relationship?
The chemical formula is not the same
Define hydrocarbons
Compounds that contain only carbon and hydrogen
What is an open chain compound (aliphatic compound)?
/\/\
Consist of:
- Saturated Hydrocarbons (alkanes/single bonds)
- unsaturated Hydrocarbons( alkenes/ double bonded, and alkynes/ triple bonded)
What is a cyclic compound?
Consist of:
Alicyclic compounds (cyclohexane)
Aromatic Compounds (benzene)
What are the root names for carbon chains from 1 through 10
1-meth
2-eth
3-prop
4-but
5-pent
6-hex
7-hept
8-oct
9-non
10-dec
What is the parent chain?
The longest continuous chain of carbon. Has the most branches
What does the root depend on?
The length (number of carbons) on the parent chain
What does the infix depend on?
What are the different infixes and what do they mean?
Whether the carbon- carbon bonds are single, double, or triple bonded.
Ane = single bonded
Ene = double bonded
Yne = triple bonded
What is the order of naming?
Substitutents + root + infix + suffix
Suffix - do first
Root - do second
Infix - do third
Substituents - do last
(Branching substituents) (parent chain) (c-c bond nature) (highest priority functional group)
What is a functional group?
A portion of the molecule that contains a specific arrangement of bonded atoms.
Gives the physical and chemical properties
