Why does malnutrition happen?
Decline in energy intake causes body to decrease metabolic rate
Pull on sources of stored energy (fat) 90%kcal and ketones
Energy production is needed for protein synthesis and by the tissues
Proteins are used to fuel gluconeogenesis (10% kcal) to produce glucose for the brain, but catabolism is minimal so erosion is minimal
