Intro to networking & connecting to a network Flashcards
Network
A collection of computers and devices connected together to share resources
Local area network
Known as LAN, a private network made up of a collection of devices in one physical location
Wide area network
Known as WAN, a network that can be public and provides connectivity beyond the geographic distance allowed by LAN; an example is the internet
Network interface card
Known as NIC, a component that allows a device to connect to a network
Host
A computer or device that connects with other computers or devices on a network
Subnet mask
A 32-bit number that identifies which portion of the IP address represents the network and which portion is unique to the hosts
IP version 4
Known as IPv4, a network protocol for internet and Ethernet transmission; a 32-bit address expressed in decimal format
Dotted-decimal format
Also known as decimal notation, a format for numerical data that consists of a string of decimal numbers, separated by periods; the format used for IP addresses
Default gateway
A router that is serving as an exit point from a local area network
Metropolitan area network
Known as MAN, a network that consists of several LANs that are interconnected within a single geographic location, such as a large city
Personal area network
Known as PAN, a small network of electronic devices that are interconnected for data transmission within a person’s workspace, such as the wireless interconnections between a person’s computer, smartphone, tablet, and smartwatch
Campus area network
Known as CAN, a type of network that connects LANs within a single location that’s smaller than the geographic area a MAN can support
