Intro to nervous system Flashcards
What makes up the CNS?
Brain and spinal cord
What is the main function of the CNS
Sensory integration and motor commands
What are neuroglia cells?
Cells that provide neural support and protection
Where are neurotransmitters made?
Cell body
How do neurotransmitters move to synaptic terminal?
Anterograde axoplasmic transport (Kinesins) and retrograde axoplasmic transports (Dynein)
What is the normal range of membrane potential
-40mV to -100mV
Which ion concentration is greater inside the neurone and outside
K is greater inside, Na is greater outside
What maintains the resting potential?
Concentration, diffusion potential and the Na/K pump
What conduction do myelinated neurons conduct?
Saltatory conduction
What happems when an action potential reaches a synapse?
It opens the voltage-gated calcium ion channels
What does calcium ions do in a synapse?
Cause fusion of synaptic vesicles to the presynaptic membrane
What does the ascending tract carry
Sensory info to CNS
What do the descending tracts do?
Send CNS info to motor neurons
What is a dermatome
An area of cutaneous sensory innervation that a single dorsal root and its spinal ganglia provideh
What does the autonomic nervous system do?
Sympathetic (fight or flight response), parasympatheitc, homeostasis mainenance
