Intro To Neoplasia Part 1 Flashcards
Malignant tumor of connective tissue, mesenchymal cells, or other non-epithelial cells. Tend to metastasize hematogenously.
Sarcoma
Malignant tumor of epithelium (esp of skin) and lining of organs. Likely spread through lymphatics.
Carcinomas
Germ cell tumor. Usually involves mature or immature ectoderm, endoderm, and mesoderm
Teratoma
Think teratogen - deveoplment - ectoderm/mesoderm/endoderm development
Disorganized overgrowth of tissue in their native site
Hamartoma
Normal tissue in a foreign location
Choristoma
Chorey is normally here
Word meaning lack of differentiation
Technically means, “To form backward”
Anaplasia
Word meaning variation in size and shape of cells
Pleomorphism
Pre-malignant disordered growth. Cells may be Pleomorphic (higher N/C ratio). Cells have loss of uniformity of individual cells and loss of architectural orientation
Dysplasia
DISorder = DYSplasia
Dysplasia involving entire thickness of epithelium but does NOT go through basement membrane
Carcinoma in situ
Dysplastic epithelial cells that involve whole thickness of epithelium & breach basement membrane
Invasive carcinoma
Grading of cancer based on:
Detemrined by:
Cellular appearance & mitotic activity
DEtemrined by microscopy
Stage of cancer based on:
Determined by:
Localization/spread based on size, local and regional lymph node spread, and distant metastases
Determined by surgery and/or radiology
