What are the four main properties of musical sounds?
Duration, pitch, dynamics, timbre (tone color).
Pitch
- *Highness or lowness of sound.
- determines by the frequency of vibrations.
Timbre (tone color)
a quality of sound that distinguishes one instrument from another. (can be bright, dark, mellow, etc.)
How many keys and octaves does a piano have?
88 keys and 7 octaves
Beat
regular recurring pulses that divides music into unit of time.
Cadence
A melody that serves as a starting point (or “point of arrival”) for long piece of music (at a phase).
Chords
three or more tones sounded at once.
Tonic (I)
triad built on the first scale note and control tone.
Tonic key/ home key
main key of piece.
monophonic texture
single, unaccompanied melody “one sound” only melody. ex: Mary had a little lamb
polyphonic texture
two or more important melodic lines play at the same time.
homophonic texture
one melody with chordal accompaniment - most pop songs.
