Intro to Microbiology Flashcards
Who disproved the Spontaneous Generation theory?
Louis Pasteur
What is the atmosphere during Archaean and Hadean eon wherein there is no oxygen, Ozone layer is not yet formed and there is a direct exposure to ultraviolet rays?
Anoxic atmosphere
Enumerate the impact of microbiology on humans in the field of Agriculture.
Mycorrhizar nodes, Bt Corns, Phytopathogens
What is the study of microorganisms and their impact on other living things?
Microbiology
Who developed the petri dish, a standard tool for obtaining pure cultures?
Julius Richard Petri
What is the first actual life form?
Microbial Life form
Enumerate the diversity of microorganisms
Spores of Aspergillus, Yeast cells, Basidiomycetes, Bacterial cells, Bacterial colonies, Microbiome on Human Body
When did the Great Oxidation Event happened?
Proterozoic eon
What are the positive and negative impact of microbiology on human in the food industry?
Positive impact - Fermented food
Negative impact - Food spoilage, Foodborne diseases (very negative impact)
Why is Antibiotic resistance bad?
Because when we are sick, we tend to not take the prescribed dosage of antibiotic. This results in empowering the bacteria, making it impossible to kill.
What theory states that all living organisms are composed of cells?
Cell theory by Robert Hooke
__________ is ubiquitous, tiny organisms that cannot be seen by the naked eye and are commonly called germs
Microorganisms or Microbes
Who constructed practical microscope to observe microbial life forms?
Anton Von Leeuwenhoek
What eon did the formation of the earth and the origin of life happened?
Hadean
What is the impact of microbiology in the industry field?
Biogas as Power source, Drugs, and Antibiotic Resistance
Who introduced the method of hand washing?
Ignaz Semmelweis
What happened during the origin of Anoxygenic photosynthesize and Oxygenic photosynthesize?
Oxygen molecule was created
Why was the Spontaneous Generation Theory disproved?
Pasteur replicated the situation wherein there is left meat in a container that is left open, in a container that is tightly closed, and in a container with mesh cover. After some time, maggots and flies began appearing and swarming around the container that is left open, maggots and flies began appearing and swarming around the mesh cover on the container with a mesh cover while no maggots and flies appeared and swarm around the meat in a container that is tightly closed. This concluded that life could not spontaneously arise from a nonliving matter.
Who introduced the aseptic technique in order to kill and prevent from microbial infection of surgical patients?
Joseph Lister
Enumerate what are the impact of microbiology on diseases
Phytopathogens, Human Pathogens, COVID-19 Pandemic
Who started formulating Cell theory?
Robert Hooke
What year did the hand washing method become standardized?
1980
What do the Germ theory of Disease or Koch’s Postulate states or proposes?
That some diseases are caused by microorganism
Who discovered the causative agent of diseases like anthrax, cholera, and tuberculosis?
Robert Koch
Why did Ignaz Semmelweis proposed the hand washing method?
He noticed that the hospital run by doctors have high death rate on mothers who gave birth and their children compared to the midwifery run by midwives. He noticed that it is because of cadavers passed on to mothers and infants from doctors who also performs surgeries and autopsies. He proposed this method and the death rate dropped. However since doctors felt they were blamed for the death of mothers and their children, they rebelled and did not use the hand washing method until after a plague/epidemic
Explain the Koch’s Postulate
A microorganism is obtained from an individual or organism with a disease. This microorganism must be isolated from those who are affected by it but not those who are not and is still alive. Then, it will will introduce to a healthy individual or organism causing a disease. A microorganism from the healthy individual or organism should be obtained and be re-isolated. This microorganism should be found to be identical to the original microorganism.
