Intro To Memory Flashcards
What is encoding?
Transfer of sensory info into a CODE that the brain can use and store as a memory trace
Name the 3 types of codes
ACOUSTIC code
VISUAL code
SEMANTIC code
What is an acoustic code?
Involve sounds and are used to remember spoken language
What are visual codes?
Are used to remember a FACE or a PIC of a SCENE
What are semantic codes?
Represent input in terms of their MEANING; when we hear a story we do not remember it word for word but we retain its essential meaning
What is storage?
RETAINING the info we have encoded
Name the 3 types of storage
SENSORY
STM
LTM
What is retrieval?
RECOVERING the stored info (REMEMBERING)
What are the 3 types of retrieval?
FREE recall
CUED recall
RECOGNITION
What is free recall?
When we simply REMEMBER info e.g recalling as many words as possible from a list
What is cued recall?
When something acts as a TRIGGER for stored info e.g recalling a word from a particular position in a list
What is recognition?
Where we IDENTIFY info PREVIOUSLY LEARNED e.g ability to recognise words I a list even if we cannot recall them
Define memory
Process by which we RETAIN info about events that have happened in the PAST
