Intro To Marine Science Flashcards
What is marine biology
Study of life in the sea, including estuaries at river mouths
Organism behavior and habitat, etc
Ocean ecosystem - coral reefs
Global perspective- whole oceans
Marine biologists
Study the living organisms of the ocean
Oceanographers
Study the non-living aspects of the ocean
Geological chemical and physical branches
Why study Marine biology?
-Life in earth originated from the sea. It can teach us about life
- many products come form the sea: medicine, food, recreation and tourism
- marine organism produces about half the oxygen we breath
- Dangerous organism harm humans and erosion of human structures
The ocean help regulate climate. Water is slow to change in temperature, keeping coastal masses more stable Year-round
What is sonar? (Tools in marine science)
Produces sound waves to determine depth. Used to map sea floor depths and formations.
What is SCUBA?
(Self- Contained Underwater breathing apparatus) first used by Jacques Cousteau and Emile Gagnan.
- Study marine environment for longer periods and at depths otherwise unavailable to humans
Ship “pinging”
Measures time for echo to return to calcule water depth
Research vessels
These floating laboratories allow oceanographers and marine biologists to explore the marine environments for weeks, or even years without returning to a land-base facility.
Remotely operated vehicles (ROVS)
Allows for direct exploration of the marine environment when scuba is not an option .
Remote sensing
Satellite are used to study large expanses of the ocean surface.
Scientific method
Set of procedures scientists use to learn about all science
Observe (scientific method)
-observe nature to gain scientific knowledge
Induction: observation are used to reach general conclusions
Deduction: is reasoning from general principles to predict specific conclusion
Hypothesis
A testable statement constructed from observations and reasoning
Cannot be proven to be true, instead it is accepted as long as it is supported by available evidence
Variables
Are factors that might affect observations
Control
A variable the must be kept constant
Prevents the variable from affecting the experiment
