Intro to lameness evaluation in SA Flashcards
What are potential sources of gait abnormalities?
pain
mechanical problem: restricted/increased range of motion, anatomical problem
neuro dysfunction: peripheral, central
What is the lameness grading scale in SA?
0= sound
1= mild lameness, trained eye
2= moderate lameness, normal stride length and partial weight bearing
3= moderate lameness, short stride length, partial weight bearing
4= severe lameness, toe touch weight bearing, minimal use of limb
5 = non weight bearing lameness
What should we assess the joints for?
crepitus
range of motion
instability
swelling/joint effusion
pain
toes
How can we palpate carpus joint effusions?
loss of definition of carpal bones cranially
How can we palpate elbow joint effusions?
between the olecranon and lateral epicondyle
How can we palpate shoulder/hip joint effusions?
not palpaple
How can we palpate tarsus joint effusions?
cranially and caudally
How can we palpate stifle joint effusion?
either side of patella ligament
What is the basic neuro screening exam tests?
spinal palpation (including lumbosacral joint)
cervical manipulayion
proprioceptive positioning
spinal reflexes
What are specific ortho tests?
cranial drawer
cranial tibial thrust
patella luxation
ortolani
barden’s hip lift
hip luxation
