Intro to Inheritance Flashcards
1
Q
What plants did Mendel use in his experiment and why?
A
- He used pea plants
- They were widely available, reproduce fairly quickly, and have distinct measurable characteristics
2
Q
Pure Breeding Plants
(true breeding plants)
A
Offspring produced by many generations of self-pollination
3
Q
Hybrids
A
The offspring produced by two different pure breed plants
4
Q
P1 (parental generation)
A
The parents used in a “cross” (mating)
5
Q
F1
A
The offspring of the P1 generation
6
Q
F2
A
The offspring of two F1 being crossed together
7
Q
Law of Segregation
A
- During inheritance, pairs of “factors separate or “segregate” at the gamete stage
- Now we call these factors “Alleles” and two alleles together are expressed as one trait
- 2 alleles=1 genotype
8
Q
Dihybrid Cross
A
A cross between two individuals who are heterozygous for 2 traits
9
Q
Law of Independent Assortment
A
- The inheritance of alleles for one trait does NOT affect the inheritance of alleles for another trait
- We now know there are some exceptions to this
