Intro to human body Flashcards
Define anatomy.
Science of structure + their relationships
Define physiology.
Science of body functions + how body parts work
Name the levels of structural organisation (smaller to biggest)
Chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, system, organismal
What does the chemical level include?
Atoms + molecules
Define a cell.
Basic structural + functional units of organism
Define a tissue.
Group of cells that work together to perform a specific function
What are the 4 basic types of body tissues?
Epithelial, connective, muscular + nervous
What is an organ?
2 or more different tissues with specific functions
What does the system level involve?
Related organs that have a common function
Define homeostasis.
Maintenance of relatively stable conditions ensuring body’s internal environment remains constant
What does a negative feedback system do? + e.g.
Reverse a change in controlled condition e.g. BP regulation
What does a positive feedback system do? + e.g.
Strengthen + reinforce change in one of body’s controlled conditions e.g. childbirth
