Intro to heart Flashcards
What encloses the heart?
-Pericardial sac
What is the anatomical location of the heart?
-Middle mediastinum
What makes the right border of the heart?
-Predominantly Right Atrium (some RV)
What makes the left borer of the heart?
-Predominantly left ventricle
What makes the anterior surface of the heart?
-Predominantly right atrium and right ventricle
What makes the inferior border of the heart?
- Mainly right ventricle
- Some left ventricle
What makes the base (posterior) of the heart?
- Mainly the left atrium
- Some right atrium
What is the blood flow of the heart from the superior vena cava to the aorta?
-SVC/IVC and CS to RA
RA->RV->PA->lungs->PV->LA->LV->aorta
Is the aorta or superior vena cava a left handed structure?
-Aorta
What are the two sinuses (dead ends) in the heart?
- Oblique
- Transverse
Why do sinuses (dead ends) form?
-As a consequence of folding during development
Where is the oblique sinus?
-Posterior to the heart
What causes the oblique sinus?
-Reflection of the serous pericardium by SVC, IVC amd pulmonary veins
What causes the transverse sinus?
-Reflection of serous pericardium by aorta and pulmonary trunk
Why is the transverse sinus advantageous?
-Allows aorta and pulmonary trunk to be separated from the SVC by providing access to the passageway between the two
