intro to Genetics Flashcards
what is genetics
Genetics is the study of how the characteristics and qualities of parents are given to their offspring through their genes.
who is gregor mendel
the guy who explained the way in which traits are passed on from one generation to another
what did mendel’s experiments conclude
He concluded that:
Inherited traits are controlled by factors (now known as genes)
Individuals have two copies of each factor.
what does DNA stand for
Deoxyribonucleic Acid
what is DNA responsible for
DNA is responsible for inherited characteristics
what is the shape of a DNA strand
double helix
who and when was DNA isolated
1869 by Friedrich Miescher
where is DNA found
in the nucleus of cells
what does DNA contain
it contains the genetic code for every structure and function in an organism.
what does DNA determine
It determines the characteristics that are inherited from the parents.
The combination of these characteristics influences every aspect of an individual including physical, emotional, social and cognitive characteristics.
why does every person have a unique DNA and what can DNA be used for
Your DNA is a unique of combination of genetic material passed down from both of your parents
This can be used in forensics to place people at a crime scene
