Intro to Evo Psy Flashcards
What is Evo Psy?
A science that combines the psychology with evolutionary biology, specifically looking at adaptation and natural selection.
Pelham (2019)
What are ultimate and proximate questions?
1) Ultimate questions look at the evolutionary function of a trait
2) Proximate questions only look at superficial functional value of a trait
What does evolutionary theory explain?
It helps us explain human behavior in the context of evolution.
What are some criticisms of Evo Psy?
1) Accused of being sexist
2) It is heteronormative
3) Terminology may be offensive (lacks inclusivity)
What contributes to natural selection?
1) heritable variation
2) resulting in differential reproductive success
What is inclusive fitness theory (Hamilton, 1964)?
A theory used to explain altruistic behavior towards kin. C < BR, where: C = gene's reproductive cost B = gene's reproductive benefit R = coefficient of relatedness
What are adaptive processes?
1) survival adaptations
2) reproduction adaptations (sexual selection theory)
What are the 2 main processes in sexual selection?
1) intrasexual
2) Intersexual
What is the parental investment theory (Trivers, 1972)?
That males and females have different levels of investment in parenthood. Higher investment translates in more fussy selection by females.
What is sexual strategies theory (Buss & Schmitt, 1993)?
It is an extension of Trivers (1972) that looks into how strategies vary in short versus long term relationships.
How do men and women differ in short term relationship preferences?
Men are more willing to take on risks and are less fussy about mate selection.
Who do men and women differ in long term relationships?
Men look for fertility cues like youthfulness and physical attractiveness
Women look for the ability to provide through cues like ambition and social status.
