Drug Standards
set of rules for ensuring quality and safety of drugs
Controlled Substance schedule
schedule 1 to 5;
1 being highest abuse potential,
5 being very limited potential for dependence
Therapeutic drug classification
categorizes drugs by the disease they are used to treat
Pharmacologic drug classification
categorizes drugs based on mechanism of action
Indication
conditions for which the drug is meant to be used
Action
how the drug produces the effect; what happens in the cells/tissues
Effect
the result of an action;
therapeutic effect= desired effect
Contraindications
conditions/situations for which the drug should NOT be given
Precautions
conditions or types of pts that warrant closer observation
Interactions
list of drugs or foods that may alter the effect of a drug and usually should NOT be given during the same course of therapy
Side Effects
secondary physiologic effects unrelated to desired effects
Adverse Reactions
more severe than side effects;
always undesirable and unintended
Pregnancy categories
classification system developed by FDA that categorizes drug based on effects to unborn child
