Intro to Creative Writing - Sat Dec 9th 2017 Flashcards
Essential to read constantly. Read EVERYTHING - all types of creative writing: books, journalism, screenplays, poetry, short stories etc
It’s all fodder for thoughts and inspiration
Good authors to read:
Lydia Davis
Marilynne Robinson
William Boyd
Raymond Carver
Concrete - deals with the senses (sensory imagery). External senses. We need to ‘show’ the reader. It draws people in and brings writing to life.
“Vera’s car was there, no others, and Burt gave thanks for that.” A Serious Talk by Raymond Carver
Already we know about a relationship, and some tension between the 2.
Abstract - internal sense. Feeling, thoughts, emotions. Push readers away.
Narrative = a story
1/ Exposition - introduce characters, location, time and place. It is informative.
2/ Complication - there must be at least one. The idea that needs to be resolved. (External vs Internal)
3/ Resolution
We do not need adverbs. We need strong verbs. Ambled vs walked slowly.
SHOW. DO NOT TELL.
Count your adverbs and count your adjectives.
