Intro To Chemistry Flashcards
What are elements? (3 things)
- Can not be broken down into simpler substances
- Pure substances
- Found on periodic table
What are compounds? (1 thing)
Two or more different elements chemically combined in a fixed proportion
What are the two different types of mixtures?
- Homogenous (solution)
- Heterogenous (mechanical)
What is a mixture? (2 things)
- Two or more substances mixed together without producing a new substance
- The components of a mixture must be able to be seperated by simple techniques
What is a homogenous mixture? (1 thing)
A mixture in which the different phases are indistinguishable
What is a heterogenous mixture? (1 thing)
A mixture in which the different phases are distinguishable
What are physical properties? (1 thing)
They give us information about what a substance is like
How do we determine physical properties? (2 things)
- With the use of the 5 senses
- Conducting simple tests
What are quantitative properties? (1 thing)
Physical properties that have a numerical value
What are qualitative properties? (2 things)
- Physical properties that do not have a numerical value
- Determined using 5 senses
On the periodic table, what does the group number tell us about an element?
The number of valence electrons
What are the two things the atomic number of an element indicates?
- Where the element is on the periodic table
- The number of protons the element has
What is the atomic mass of an element?
The sum of the protons and the neutrons
