Intro To Cells Flashcards
What are cells?
Cells are the fundamental unit of all living things on earth.
How do cells work?
Cells take nutrients and free energy from their surroundings and make copies of themselves
Who was the first person to see a living cell?
Antonie van Leeuwenhoek
Who coined the term cells?
Robert Hooke
Who came to the conclusion “All living things are composed of cells and cell products.”?
Theodor Schwann and Matthias Jakob Schleiden.
Who said “ Cells are created through the division of pre-existing cells or Omnis Cellula e Cellula (Virchow).”?
Barthélémy du Mortier
What are 4 points of the Germ Theory of Disease or the Koch postulates?
- The microorganisms must be found in abundance in all organism’s suffering from the disease, but should not be found in healthy organisms.
- The microorganism must be isolated from a diseased organism and grown in pure culture.
- Th cultured microorganism should cause disease when introduced into a healthy organism.
- The microorganism must be reisolated from the inoculated, diseased experimental host and identified as being identical to the original specific causative agent.
What are the universal features of cells on Earth?
Plasma membrane, exchange of molecules with surroundings, communication, genetic information stored as DNA, gene expression, protein synthesis, organelles of eukaryotic cells, life as a ‘pattern in flux’, evolution from a common ancestor.
What are the general chemical composition of a mammalian cell?
Water- 70% Inorganic ions- 1% Miscellaneous small metabolites- 3% Proteins - 18% RNA- 1.1% DNA - 0.25% Phospholipids and other lipids- 5% Polysaccharides- 2%
Define homeostasis
Homeostasis is the ability or tendency of an organism or cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes.
