Intro to cardiovascular and respiratory systems Flashcards
What organs are within thoracic cavity?
Contains the heart, lungs and other associated structures
What is the entrance to the thoracic cavity called and what is it formed by?
- Thoracic inlet
- Formed by the first pair of ribs and thoracic vertebrae
What is the caudal border filled with in the thoracic cavity?
Filled with the diaphragm and ventrally sternum
What is the thoracic cavity and thoracic organs lined with?
- Serosa-pleura (serous membrane)
- Connects to underlying fascia
What is pleural fluid?
A small amount lubricates the smooth surfaces of the pleura
What does the endothoracic fascia attach the pleura to?
Pleura is attached to bony and muscular parts of the thorax by endothoracic fascia
How is pleura arranged around the lungs?
- Pleura consists of 2 separate sacs- one surrounding each lung
- Lungs never enter the pleural cavities
What type of pleura lines the lungs?
- Visceral (pulmonary) pleura
- In contact with the lungs
What type of pleura sac lines the heart?
Pericardial sac
What type of pleura lines the thorax?
Parietal pleura
What are the divisions of the parietal pleura?
- Costal pleura
- Diaphragmatic pleura
- Mediastinal pleura
What part of the thorax does the costal pleura line?
Lines the ribs
What part of the thorax does the diaphagmatic pleura line?
