Intro to Biomechanics Flashcards
What is kinesiology?
Study of movement
What is biomechanics?
Study of internal muscle forces and external forces that act on the body.
What is anatomical position?
Standing erect with palms facing forward
What axis is on the sagittal plane?
Mediolateral
What axis is on the transverse plane?
Vertical/Longitudinal Axis
What axis is on the frontal/coronal plane?
Anteroposterior axis
What does movement happen on?
Planes
What does movement happen around?
Axes
What is flexion?
Decreasing a joint angle
What is extension
Increasing a joint angle
What is hyper extension?
Past extension and away from the body
What is lateral flexion?
Flexion happening on the frontal plane
What is dorsiflexion?
Movement so the toes point superiorly
What is plantar flexion?
Movement so the toes point inferiorly
What are rigid body mechanics?
Simplifying the body to being just the bones to see movement`
What are deformable body mechanics?
How the skin and muscles move
What are fluid mechanics?
Understanding a system as it moves through a body of water or air (“Drag” or “Lift”)
What is statics?
Constant state of motion
What is dynamics?
Where acceleration is present, not constant motion
What is kinetics?
Study of actions of forces
What is kinematics?
Description of motion such as size, timing, and sequencing. The form or technique
What is the difference between qualitative and quantitative?
Qualitative: Describing movement in non-numerical terms
Quantitative: Describing movement in numerical terms
What is a scalar quantity?
A single quantity, completely described by magnitude
What is a vector quantity?
A double quantity, magnitude, and direction
What is a base quantity?
Something that can’t be calculated but instead measured
What is a derived quantity?
A calculation from combinations of base quantities
What is an example of a base quantity?
Force and Distance
What is an example of a derived quantity?
Time/Distance= Speed
What are the basic movements?
Flexion, Extension, Abduction, Adduction, internal and external rotation
Which specialized movement is a multiplanar movement?
Circumduction
