Intro to atomic structure Flashcards
What does the nucleus of an atom contain
Positively charged protons with weight of 1 and neutrons which don’t carry charge and contain a weight of 1
What do the outer shells of atoms contain
Negatively charged electrons
What are isotopes and what characteristic do they have
They have the same number of protons and different neutrons
What are ionic bonds
Involves the transfer of electron, one or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another. Atom that donates becomes a + ion, atom that accepts - ion. Occurs between metals and non metals
In the reaction N2+ 3H2→ 2NH3, if you have 4 moles of H2, how many moles of NH3 can be produced?
According to the molar ratio (3 moles of H2 produce 2 moles of NH3), 4 moles H2 ×. 2 moles NH3/ 3moles H2 =2.67 moles of NH3
what are isotopes
They have the same number of protons but diffrent neutrons
Covalent bonds
Sharing of electrons with the aim of a stable outer shell. They are formed between non metals. Covalent compounds can’t conduct electricity because all e- are paired or involved in bond formation
