intro to antibiotics and resistance Flashcards
what are antimicrobials?
broad term to describe anti-bacterials, anti-fungal, anti-viral + anti-protozoal drugs
what is the minimum inhibitory concentration?
first concentration of antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria
what are the different types of antibiotic resistance?
- intrinsic: bacteria is naturally resistant to antibiotic, this is permanent
- acquired: micoorganism obtains ability to resist antibiotic to which it was previously susceptible
- adapted: if sub-theraputic level of antibiotics used then theres only mild stress to bacteria - hence bacteria will respond by becoming resistant
what are the different anti-fungals?
- azoles inhibit cell membrane synthesis
- polyenes inhibit cell membrane function
what are the different anti-virals?
- aciclovir prevents viral replication
- oseltamivir prevents viral replication by inhibiting viral neuraminidase
what are some beta lactam antibiotics?
penicillin
carbapenem
cephalosporin
what is a side effect of cephalasporin?
causes C.difficle infection
who should tetracyclines not be given to?
children <12 + pregnant or breastfeeding women
what are side effects of fluroquinolones?
tendinitis and rupture
aortic dissection
CNS effects
C.difficle infection
what are side effects of co-trimoxazole?
aplastic anaemia
