antimicrobial stewardship Flashcards

A
Coordinated interventions designed to improve and measure the appropriate use of antimicrobials by promoting the selection of the optimal antimicrobial drug regimen, dose, duration of therapy, and route of administration
2
Q
what does antimicrobial stewardship aim to achieve?
A
- optimal clinical outcomes
- minimise toxicity and other adverse events
- reduce cost of healthcare infections
- limit selection for antimicrobial resistant strains
3
Q
why is antimicrobial stewardship important?
A
aims to minimise emergence of resitance
4
Q
how does antimicrobial stewardship work in practice?
A
- Does the patient need antibiotics?
- Can we switch this to oral from IV?
- Can we change broad-spectrum antibiotics to narrow-spectrum & targeted antibiotics?
