Intro to AEBM Flashcards
What is evidence based medicine
EBM is integration of best available evidence with clinical experience and patient values and preferences
What is the best evidence for a specific practice (in terms of EBM)
systematic summaries of evidence is the best form of evidence. Doctors practicing EBM should be aware of these evidences and their power
Evidence alone is not enough, what other factors should be considered when making a clinical decision?
patient’s values and preferences
trade off the benefits and risks
inconvenience
cost
Outline the “quality” of evidence pyramid (the editorials/expert opinion is the most broad and least specific evidence)
Outline the PICO acronym
P= patient or popualtion in question
I = intervention being consiedred
C = comparator
O = outcome.
this is a good outline for developing a question that can be answered
3 mains steps in the EBM process
-
appraise: evaluate the info.
- usefulness of any sources a. how serious is the risk of bias (validity)
b. what are the results? - apply: how to apply these results to the patient care?
- act: this involves shared decision making with your patient.
in terms of relevance, what’re the types of evidence?
- disease-oriented evidence.
- patient-oriented evidence.
prognostic factor
factors that relate to the patient and affect the outcome of the disease Ex/ smoking. the patient smokes and it also affects the play out of covid
