Intro of Skill Acquisition Flashcards
What is the definition of skill?
“A skill is the learned ability
to bring about pre-determined results with maximum certainty; often
with the minimum outlay of
time or energy or both.”
What are 3 types of skill?
- Motor
- Perceptual
- Cognitive
What is an example of a cognitive skill?
Focus, visual attention, visual tracking and fast decision-making.
From basketball, where a player might have to quickly decide whether to shoot or pass the ball, to football, where a quarterback needs to decide which receiver to throw to based on how the defense is positioned.
What is an example of a perceptual skill?
For example, a hockey player must track the movement of the puck and their opponents simultaneously while they skate, and a basketball player must track the movement of the ball and their teammates and opponents on the court.
Looking at the positions of your team players in order to decide where to pass the ball.
What is an example of a motor skill?
This involves a player’s ability to control the ball with their hands while moving and maneuvering around defenders. It is essential for success in many sports such as football, soccer, baseball, and volleyball. Other sports-specific motor skills might include running technique, body positioning, or agility drills.
Walking, running, stretching, bending, catching, and throwing.
