Intro and Self-injury Flashcards
What is disease?
The disturbance of structure and function of the host’s tissues.
What is clinical and subclinial?
Clinical: Able to be seen by examination (producing clinical signs. The expression of a series of pathological processes)
Subclinical: Not able to be seen by examination (no visible effect on the host but can be detected by lab tests)
What are the three terms for disease?
aetiological agent
pathogen
agent of disease
What causes agents of disease?
- infectious agents (living organisms)
- not necessarily contagious - physical
- toxins and deficiencies
- inherited disorders
- idiopathic
Do pathogens always cause disease?
depends on relationship between host, agent and environment
*exposure does not equal disease
What is pathogenesis?
the development of disease
What is pathology?
- the structural and functional manifestations of disease
- study of disease
What is disease?
abnormality of structure or function of a tissue
What is pathophysiology?
the physiology of disordered function`
What are the 5 pathological processes?
- degeneration and necrosis (cell injury)
- inflammation and repair and immunology
- circulatory disturbances
- disorders of growth
- Tissue deposits and pigments
*can occur together or as a chain of events to manifest disease
What are the causes of cell injury?
- Hypoxia
- Physical agents
- Chemical agents
- Genetic factors
- Infectious agents
- Inflammation
