Intro Flashcards
Define developmental psychology Give an overview of ways development can be studied Describe the different methods we use to study change Explain the strengths and weaknesses of different methods Describe the tools we use to study development Know how to ask a question on this module
Define developmental psychology
The study of change and stability over the lifespan. Specifically how we cognitively, physically, behaviourally and socially over time due to biological, individual and environmental differences
Whats ontogenetic development
The development of an individual over their lifetime
Whats micro genetic development
Changes that occur over very brief period of time
Whats phylogenetic development
Changes over evolutionary time
What are fundamental issues in developmental psychology
Individual differences, different sources of development, is development continuous or discontinuous and plasticity
Strengths and weaknesses of cross sectional study
Strengths - less time consuming,
weaknesses - can’t look at how individual children change as performance is averaged over different individuals
Strengths and weaknesses of longitudinal study
Strengths - can look at within and between children
weaknesses - high cost and time consuming, children may get better as they practice more
Strengths and weaknesses of a microgenetic study
Strengths - precise
weaknesses - often has small samples and can result in practice effects
What are the challenges to studying development x5
- ) Young children have limited language, attention and motor skills
- ) need to think of ways to measure skills in an accessible way
- ) recruitment
- ) parental interference
- ) gaining consent
Whats increasing ability
Behaviour that improves with age
Whats decreasing ability
Behaviour that worsens with age
Whats a discontinuous function
Where development takes place in a series of stages
Whats a U shaped function
Development which is poor at birth, increases rapidly and then diminishes
