Syndrome v. Disorder v. Disease v. Illness

A
  • Syndrome - set of signs and symptoms that occur together, representative of a morbid condition (psych more syndromic than other parts of medicine)
  • Disorder - morbid condition w/o known basis or pathology
  • Disease - morbid condition w/ characteristic signs and symptoms and known etiology, pathology or physiology
  • Illness - condition of pronounced deviation from normal healthy state; any morbid condition

Categorical v Dimensional Disorders + Examples

  • Categorical - have disease or do not (ex- schizophrenia)

- Dimensional - spectrum; have a lot, little or none (ex - anxiety & personality disorders)

Validity v Reliability

A
  • Validity - is the condition real? - DSM V does not necessarily help w/ this
  • Reliability - do multiple experts agree on who has condition and who does not - DSM V helps w/ this

What is a mental disorder?

A
  • clinically sig disturbance in cognition, emotion regulation or behavior that reflects underlying dysfunction and results in sig distress or inability to function daily
  • Grief is normal (not mental disorder) but if so sad that it becomes functionally/clinically sig then still treat
  • Social deviancy is not a mental illness
