Food
Includes any article manufactured, sold or represented for use as food or drink for humans, chewing gum and any ingredient that may be mixed with food.
Products derived usually from plants or animals that can be taken into the body to supply energy and nutrients for the maintenance of life, growth and repair of tissues.
3 main categories of food functions
Nutrition - energy, growth and maintenance of the human body
Sensory Satisfaction - flavour, aroma and pleasure of having food. (Social and cultural aspects)
Modulation of physiological systems - immune fcns, cardiovascular fcns, etc.
Functional food
Food products fortified with special constituents that have physiological benefits other than nutritional functions of the body.
May reduce the risk of chronic disease
FOSHU
Foods for specified health uses: specific health claims for this type of food
Nutrients
Substances obtained from food and used in the body to provide energy and structural materials and regulate growth, maintenance, and repair of body tissues.
Fortified products
A food fortified with additional nutrients
Enriched products
A food with added new nutrients or components not normally found in a particular food
Altered products
A food from which a deleterious component has been removed, reduced or replaced with another substance with beneficial effects
Enhanced commodities
A food in which one of the components has been naturally enhanced through special growing conditions, new feed composition, genetic manipulation or otherwise
Nutraceutical
A product isolated or purified from foods that is generally sold in medicinal forms not usually associated with food.
Physiological benefit or provides protection against chronic disease.
Concentrated forms of food or food constituents that can be taken in pills, powder, or other medicinal forms that have specific health benefits.
Natural Health Products (NHP)
Made from natural sources, sold in dosage form, and designed to maintain health, to restore or correct human health function, or to diagnose, treat or prevent disease - tablets, capsules, tinctures, solutions, creams, ointments and drops
