Intro Flashcards
Sensation
Passive process of bringing information from outside world into body and brain
Perception
Active process of selecting, organizing, and interpreting information brought to the brain by senses
Types of thresholds
Absolute and difference (JND)
Measuring Absolute threshold
1) method of constant stimulus
2) method of limits
3) method of adjustment
Difference threshold
Smallest detectable difference between two stimuli, or minimum change in a stimulus, that enables it to be correctly judged as different from a reference stimulus
Weber’s Law
Principle describing relationship between stimulus and resulting sensations; JND is constant fraction of comparison stimulus
Steven’s Power Law
Principle describing relationship between stimulus and resulting sensation; perceived magnitude is proportional to stimulus magnitude raised to exponent
