Process of lap surgery?
A
- small incisions are made in the abdomen
- surgical instruments and a camera are inserted through these small incisions
- surgeons performs the surgery by watching a TV screen
- physiology: gas used is CO2, can be problem for pts w/ COPD
alt: helium and nitrous oxide - increased intra-abdominal pressure: effects (similar to intra-abdominal compartment syndrome) - ventilation, decreases venous return
- balance b/t cardiac fxn and volume status (anesthesia)

General complications of laparoscopy?
A
- injury to adjacent organs: bleeding solid organs vascular injuries bowel injury (puncture, cautery) bladder/uterus injury - access sites complications: port site hernia wound infection - post-op shoulder pain
